Birds of WoodsEdge, is a stunning gallery wall collection created and donated by WoodsEdge resident, Lee Musgrave. This beautiful series of sumi-e (black ink and watercolor on rice paper) paintings, was inspired by the natural landscapes and birdlife throughout the community. Sumi‑e is more than a medium—it’s a Zen‑influenced artistic philosophy. Each brushstroke is meant to be deliberate, uncorrected, and expressive of the artist’s inner state. The ink’s simplicity supports this approach: no color, no embellishment, just form and spirit. Each of Musgrave’s pieces reflects her dedication, artistry, and thoughtful attention to capturing the spirit and simplicity of nature.
Musgrave explained, “When I fully retired in 2007, I became involved with the senior center in Norfolk. A sumi-e art class was offered and I became hooked. I have enjoyed painting for others since. Donating my paintings to nonprofits for auctions and sales brings me much joy.
“We had so much fun with Lee planning and sharing this exhibit. She used our birding themed streets and home plans and created something beautiful for the whole community to enjoy and we couldn’t be more grateful,” shares Tambra Dixon, who works in Philanthropy at Warm Hearth.
While the collection has now sold in full, with proceeds benefiting the Warm Hearth Foundation, Lee’s artwork will remain on display in the Village Center Gallery Wall through mid-April. We invite everyone to stop by and experience her work and the meaningful story behind it.
